Mr. Rexy the Vegetarian Dinosaur Dragon

This guy right here is Mr. Rexy. He might look a might bit scary with all of those giant sharp teeth and spikes, but he is a gentle fellow. He is a vegetarian, and he is half T-Rex, half Hookfang dragon. He has gotten a bad rap, you see, from looking so mean. Really, though, he is like a giant teddy bear.
Mr. Rexy had a problem today, however, because a bunch of Pterodactyls “took the rocks from the lake trying to hit him because they were scared of him. They didn’t know he was nice because they never talked to him to see if he was really scary or if he just looked scary.”
Even though this was a bad move on the Pterodactyls’ part, it worked to Mr. Rexy’s advantage. The wet rocks worked to stop the lava from the volcano was erupting, because sometimes “good things happen from bad things.” The volcano is now just “drooling” lava and can’t hurt Mr. Rexy or anyone else. Sometimes we save the day even the original intention wasn’t the right one.
What we do know is that Mr. Rexy needs friends. And maybe a hug. We all need hugs sometimes, just be careful because this vegetarian half T-Rex half Hookfang doesn’t always watch where his spikes go. Hug at your own risk.
I Can Create Pictures in my Mind… and I Can Make them Come Out as Art.
My Nana bought me a little magnet drawing pad to use in the car as I get bored these days really easily, and my Mama and Daddy are not “stay still” kind of folks. I love my new board so much because I love to draw. I draw on paper all of the time, but I have a hard time with the pen sometimes, and I run out of paper. When that happens, sometimes my art has spilled onto the furniture and a few of my toys. My Mama says, “Only on the paper, Dorian,” and I know and understand, but it is really, really tempting to keep making art everywhere that I go.
With my little magnet pad, though, I never run out of room to draw, because when I get tired of my picture, I just make it go away and then I start right over again with a blank magnet page. I can do this as many times as I would like, and there are no art accidents that way. Everyone is happy.
In that picture up at the top, those are two pirates. When I drew them I told Mama and Daddy, and Mama took a picture of me making my art. Mama thought that they were ghosts, but that is the beauty of art… we can all see different things.
Sometimes I draw something really scary to me, though, and I have to scratch it out really fast before erasing it because that takes longer. Our minds can sometimes create really weird things when we do not mean for them to, just like when we dream and things start to go wrong and everything gets dark. I don’t know why the scary guy came out on the magnet pad, but I made him disappear, and fast.
No matter what, though, scary mind people or not, I am going to keep making art and making pictures on paper and on my magnet pad. It is the way that I can show the world that there are so many beautiful pictures in my mind… and those pictures can become my art on canvas.
Imagination… the Best Superpower on Earth.
Some people might call this a “laundry basket.” Mama and Daddy do, I guess because they seem to only use it to carry clothes from the washing place to the places where the clothes rest until we put them on again.
This is not a laundry basket, though, at least not when I don’t want for it to be. It can be anything that I choose, and right now, it’s a little house that I am safe in. You can’t see me because I’m in here, but I can see you… I’m looking right at you.
Maybe later I’ll make you into a sled or a rocket ship, little basket. Until then, I will sip on my juice and enjoy being invisible in here. See you later, everyone.
Music and Dancing Brings Families Together.
This past weekend was a rainy and cold one and the sun hardly came out to play at all. When that happens, most of the time we all stay inside and we have to find lots of things to keep busy. I can most always find something to do and I just become a little baby hurricane, taking everything in my path and putting it somewhere else. My older brother and sisters, though, they can get what is called “stir crazy” and want to go somewhere else and just not know what to do with themselves. We can all run around the house chasing each other and our little doggie or jump up and down or all become little hurricanes, but Mama says that since there are four of us that then it gets to where we are “bouncing off the walls” and that you begin to not be able to walk anywhere without having something in your way. I can do this by myself, too, but with them helping me…. it is pretty amazing the beautiful mess that we can make.
My Daddy is always trying to come up with things for us to do, though, and he is really good at making fun when there wasn’t fun before. Mama says that he never completely grew up himself and that he remembers how to play more than some big people, and she says that this is the best way to be in life. She tells me that we all have a little bit of child in us forever, but she says that some people push it way, way down and that they don’t let it out much. She says her child is in her head and that it comes out in words and reading and in her dreams. Daddy, though, she said is really special because he doesn’t hide his child much and it is still right there, and so he can play with us in a different way than the people that have pushed their child deep down where they can’t get it anymore.
So Daddy put on music videos to have us listen in and sing and dance. Daddy and Mama both have me listen to music and watch music videos every day, and they pick a lot of different types of music– soothing slow music, fast and loud music, dance music, old music, new music– and they tell me that the more that I listen to and love, the more I will understand that music is beautiful in a lot of different ways and that it is art. I thought that art was painting like when I make pictures on paper, but they said that art is someone putting their heart into something so much that it is part of them, and they said that there are a lot of ways that can happen.
Because we were all going to dance this time, though, and to get all of our attention (which is really tough to do), he put on fun and fast things that he knew we would get into like Daft Punk and Taylor Swift. I really love the Taylor Swift “Shake it Off” song because it is so bouncy that I can’t help but dance. It was a good choice, too, because it brought all of us in together in the same room.
At first it was just me standing alone in the room looking at the video and bouncing.
Then everyone saw me there and heard the music, and magic happened. Everyone stopped what they were doing and gathered around me in a little circle and danced along with me, and I got to look around and see that they were doing what I was doing and that they were laughing with me and having fun. Stopping to have fun together doesn’t always happen, but when it does… that is real magic that you can feel in your belly. My big sister Addie threw all of herself into it, because that is what she does for everything, and my big, big sister Lilli danced a lot like the people in the video, because Mama and Daddy said that she takes dance and is “graceful,” which means that she can move like water. My giant brother Jonah even danced along, too, but he might not have if I hadn’t been there I don’t think because he is getting bigger. He had his little phone machine video taping me and trying to get me to laugh and dance while he danced along with me.
It was so much fun that when it was over I was still bouncing up and down to the music that was still in my head (music can get stuck in there sometimes like glue).
Mama tells me that music brings others together and that her and Daddy will show me more and more how powerful it really is as I get bigger. I believe her, and I think that it just might be one of the most powerful things on Earth. After all, my brother and sisters and me are all so, so different in what we love, what we do, and who we are… but we can all feel the joy that music and dancing on a rainy day can be.
Oh Mr. Darcy, Everyone Can’t Help but Fall in Love with You.
My Mama loves books and loves reading, and she is teaching me to, too. Sometimes I am so busy that I don’t want to slow down and stop to look at books for long, but Mama is teaching me patience and that being still is a good thing sometimes. She is a teacher for big people, so she tries to teach many people to love reading, even when they are way bigger than me. She says some big people need to learn to slow down and to let their mind get into books, too.
Today we read the baby version of “Pride and Prejudice” a few times in a row because right now it’s my very favorite. It is a short book, and Mama says the big people one is much longer– but she said that I wouldn’t make it through the whole story quite yet. She says that it is a happy ending though, and that the man named Mr. Darcy turns out to be one of the kindest and sweetest people written into a character. My book, though, is a counting book, and it counts some of the things that are in the big book, like “4 marriage proposals.” I know that Mama and Daddy are married, so I know that it means love. Mama says the big book is all about love and finding it in just the right place with the right person, and that sometimes love comes from places that you didn’t think you’d find it at first.
All that I know is that my book is bright and beautiful, and that I can learn all about love when my Mama snuggles in to read with me. Mama says that love is truly the best thing on Earth, and she says that I will always know a love of reading and a love of snuggling because they are some of her favorite things to do with me. I sure am glad about that, because my love for Mama, and my love for that book… they are bigger than I can make into words.
Fun Can Come From Anywhere!
Today we got a package from Amazon on our back door, and when we had opened it up and taken the stuff out of it tonight, I got to play in it and climb in and out and in and out. Mama said I was just like a cat, and I have seen our kitty get into and out of boxes, so I guess I am kind of like our little kitty.
Daddy decided to make it even more fun, though… he made a hole on one side, put a carabiner through it, and connected a rope to that so that it was just like a brown box wagon. I got to say “weeeeeeee” while Mama and Daddy pulled me around in circles in our house over and over all the way until bedtime.
Fun stuff doesn’t have to be fancy. It can be a brown box– just so long as you look at it in the right kind of light.
